Varishta, an initiative by Silversmile Eldercare Foundation, is dedicated to increasing awareness about dementia and mobilising support for those affected. Varishta was created to spread awareness about dementia in the elderly caused by Alzheimer's and other diseases, and provide support for the elderly with dementia and their caregivers. Varishta aims to establish care centers and specialized living facilities for elderly patients with dementia.
5.5 percent of India’s population of 1.3 billion (May 2016), is aged above 65 years. Of this, about 3.3 percent are aged above 70 years. Nearly 4.2 million elderly Indians suffer from dementia due to Alzheimer's or other diseases. While a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease or another dementia is life changing for the person with the disease, their family and friends, there is very limited information and support available for them. As awareness is low, many are not diagnosed for years, and their symptoms such as forgetting, making mistakes and inability to do normal tasks, are considered a part of normal ageing. The emotional cost of dementia is immense and caregiver stress is extremely high. Early diagnosis and management can help dementia patients and their families reduce the effect the disease has on individuals and families.
Varishta aspires to be a reliable source of knowledge, support and strength for the elderly with dementia, their caregivers and loved ones. Its aim is to provide care solutions to the elderly, their caregivers and families, with a focus on maintaining the elderly’s dignity and giving them excellent quality of life.
Varishta aims to establish a dementia friendly community by creating awareness about dementia in the elderly caused by Alzheimer's and other diseases, and providing support for elders with dementia and their care givers.
Currently, Varishta is in the process of establishing a centre in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India.
