About Aashray Incubator

India, with a population of over 1.21 billion (Census 2011), provides innumerable opportunities to entrepreneurs, especially the youth, to develop ideas into innovative enterprises that contribute to inclusive growth, irrespective of the sectors and geographic locations.
Government of India’s policies and initiatives such as “Make in India” and "Start-up India, Stand up India" make India an ideal place for business, technology and social incubation, which are recognized as important tools for job creation, income generation, economic development and sustainable livelihoods. A general perception is that most top entrepreneurs in India are highly educated and from India’s top institutes. However, there are also entrepreneurs who are not from the top institutes and have created evolutionary enterprises that have translated an idea or invention into a good or service that has created value and/ or for which customers are willing to pay. Others have created disruptive innovations that have totally changed a product or a service. In a social context, innovations help create new methods for alliance creation, joint venturing etc. and for creation of buyers' purchasing power. Incube Ventures and Saath Livelihoods who have promoted Aashray Incubator to contribute to finding “out of the box” solutions for India’s inclusive developmental needs. With over 20 years of combined experience of introducing innovations and enterprises, the promoters of Aashray decided to join forces to support young people with innovative ideas and start-ups in transforming ideas into socially relevant products and services that will materially benefit the people at the bottom and median levels of the economic pyramid. Aashray Incubator supports: a) social enterprises that directly work towards achieving social or environmental impact; b) transformative technologies in the areas of biotechnology, nanotechnology, non-destructive testing and diagnostics, and information and communication related technologies.

Objectives

  • Provide a platform for setting-up of appropriate, sustainable and scalable technological and social enterprises.
  • Identify innovative business ideas and entrepreneurs, including those that have evolved in not-for-profit organisations, academic institutions, and R&D institutions for setting up techno social business ventures as incubatees.
  • Provide optimal incubation support to incubatees, including through collaboration and networking with other entities in the incubation ecosystem.
  • Collaborate with financing institutions, funders/ donors and individuals for funding start-ups/ accelerators supported by Aashray.
  • Strengthen/ build the Aashray Endowment Fund through CSR contributions and donations from HNIs/ others to make available seed capital for innovations or ideas that may otherwise be shelved due to inadequacy or lack of funding.
  • Nurture and provide consultancy support for setting-up of Aashray incubation model/ incubation eco-systems to promote the start-up movement in India (including GoI initiatives such as “Make in India” and "Start-up India, Stand up India")
  • Develop appropriate infrastructure including state-of-the-art transitional R&D laboratories and equipment through collaborations.
  • Build alliances with government agencies, incubators, industry and academia internationally to create an enabling and inclusive ecosystem for techno-social business start-ups.

Saath Livelihoods is a not for profit company registered on 12 February 2007 with the aim of promoting and supporting social enterprises and creating livelihood enhancement opportunities for communities, especially for youth, women, artisans and other excluded groups through integrated, collaborative and strategic support in the context of the changing demographic, economic and environmental needs.
Incube Ventures
Incube Ventures is a private limited company incorporated on 12 August 2010 that promotes and manages an Incubation Centre, and is committed to sponsoring and managing of funds such as Incube Connect Fund and others focused on creation of high impact in the social and technology sectors; to incubating and seed funding start-up enterprises and providing acceleration support.
Ashoka
Ashoka India is a part of Ashoka innovators for the Public, which was founded by Bill Drayton in 1980. Ashoka is an international network that is driving the social sector and offering a platform for people dedicated to changing the world. Ashoka pioneered the field of social entrepreneurship and has built multi-level stakeholders across the world who increasingly look for entrepreneurial talent and new ideas to solve social problems.
